2007 update

We had a wonderful campmeeting in 2007 and plans are already underway for 2008. We were pleased to see many new faces this year, along with many faithful friends. Thanks to everyone for their prayers, attendance, and support. Thanks especially to the all-volunteer board who worked so hard to prepare the grounds and make other arrangements. Thanks also to our evangelist, Steve James, who gave us a blessing every night - and to all those who provided special music, especially Firm Foundation and The Remnant.

Our 2008 evangelist will be Bob Nelson and our nightly special music will be provided by Firm Foundation. We are looking forward already to another wonderful year. Check back here throughout the year for updates and announcements.

2007 Schedule and Special Events

Campmeeting 2007 will run nightly, Sunday through Sunday, July 29 - August 5. Services begin each night at 7 p.m. These are revival-style services filled with good music, traditional hymns, and meaningful messages.

Rev. Steve James, pastor of Gethsemane Baptist Church, of Danville KY, will be our 2007 evangelist. Firm Foundation will lead the music worship and provide special music each evening. They are an inspired young group that everyone should hear!
*****************************************************************
Special events for this year's 110th anniversary will be:

Wed. August 1st - Old Fashioned Days - Join the fun - dress up like our campmeeting ancestors did! Bring out your best bibs, bonnets, and bow-ties! Awards will be given to the oldest participant, youngest participant, and family with the most dressed-up members. (You do not have to dress-up to attend this service, but it is fun!)

Friday, August 3rd - Youth Celebration Night. Begins at 5:30 p.m. with free hot dogs and refreshments for the youth (all ages) and their chaperones. During this time the Christian Rock band, The Remnant, will perform a free concert. All church groups, as well as individual youth, are encouraged to attend this special evening. The service that evening at 7 will be for everyone, and will feature a special youth-centered message.

Saturday, August 3 - Ice Cream Social. Free home-made ice cream will be served following the 7 p.m. service.

Sunday, August 4. Homecoming. Services will begin at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a potluck dinner on the grounds at noon. A special music concert will follow featuring Firm Foundation. The year's services will conclude with a 7 p.m. service that evening. Everyone is invited to the Homecoming events. All the old and new friends of the campmeeting are encouraged to bring photos and other memorabilia to share!

Also - it's a good idea to bring seat cushions or blankets to sit on, as the benches are original "hardwood." We will also be offering this year, for a small donation, seat cushions with the campmeeting logo on them - available at the campmeeting (profits go to promote and continue the campmeeting).

Hope to see you at Campmeeting!

Yelvington Camp Meeting history

Some historical information about the Yelvington Annual Camp Meeting:

According to essays by Mrs. Nannie Shadwick, former board member and secretary, the time of year was chosen because most of the crops had been harvested by area farmers and so they were free to come to the meetings. Her family, like many of the neighbors, used to load up horse-drawn wagons with food and supplies to spend the week (or week and a half) on the grounds so they could participate in the worship services, which were then held throughout the day. There was also a hotel on the grounds at one time.

The whole hillside was abuzz with noise as several preachers were needed to evangelize to the large crowds of hundreds or thousands. There were also other activities like horse-trading, discussing crops, and catching up on the news to compete with the pastors and the natural noises of crickets and owls. It has been told that the first automobile on the grounds caused quite a stir, terrifying the horses. Once electricity was introduced to the campgrounds, yellow bulbs were used to light the services yet help deter insects. The old-fashioned style hand-held paper fans are still used, but are complimented today by ceiling fans.

Some annual worshippers know that they are at least the fourth or fifth generation of their family to be part of this special tradition.

The open-sided tabernacle was built on the site shortly after the land was deeded to the Campground Association by Mr. Fletch Smeathers in the 1880s. The original tabernacle, and many of the original benches, still are used today. Many famous evangelists have spoken on the grounds, including: Billy Sunday, Uncle Bud Robinson, J.E.L. Moore, and Frank Harvey. Many recent evangelists have been from Kentucky, but some have come from as far as Florida and Georgia.

Oops!

This blog had to be recreated because it was linked to a church blog and couldn't have a separate profile. We did lose some of our old posts that were here, but the address is the same and the photos and information from those old posts is still in the campmeeting scrapbook! There will be plenty of new pictures and information to come as we prepare for Campmeeting 2007!

If you have information or photos for the scrapbook, please let Tonya N. know.
